Chicago Records 300th Homicide Over Father’s Day Weekend — Just Like Last Year

Chicago recorded its 300th homicide over the Father’s Day weekend, just like it did last year.

The somber milestone was reached around 2:30 a.m. Monday when a 33-year-old man was gunned down during a burst of violence that saw four people killed and 13 others wounded over just five hours Sunday evening through early Monday.

Over the entire weekend, 11 people were killed and at least 50 others were shot and wounded across the city.  The homicides include a couple in their 60s who were stabbed to death and a 3-year-old girl who died from an assault early Sunday on the West Side.

The toll was similar to last Father’s Day weekend when 13 people were killed and 46 others were shot and wounded, according to data kept by the Tribune.

Still, the number of homicides and shootings remains lower than last year, when violence reached levels not seen in two decades.

Homicides are down slightly, by about six, from this time last year, according to Tribune data.  The city recorded its 300th homicide a day later than last year.

Shootings are down more sharply: at least 1,609 people shot this year compared with 1,789 this time last year.

However, the violence this year is much higher than other recent years.  The city didn’t see its 300th homicide in 2015 until Aug. 17; in 2014,  Sept. 11; and in 2013, Sept 1.
