George Lopez Booed Off Stage For Anti-Trump Jokes

Are conservatives finally winning the culture?

Alleged comedian George Lopez was booed off the stage while emceeing a charity gala after grasping for the lowest-hanging fruit with a litany of jokes at President Trump’s expense. According to Page Six, Lopez’s performance sled precipitously downhill after Trump backer and Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei, who had donated $250,000 to the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes fundraiser, asked that Lopez keep the lame anti-Trump barbs to a minimum at the Carousel Ball. Despite Maffei’s polite request from the front row, Lopez apparently pressed forward with his anti-Donald diatribe until he was ultimately booed off the stage.

Lopez’s shtick all focused, unsurprisingly, on the issue of race. He reportedly told Maffei, “Thank you for changing my opinion on old white men, but it doesn’t change the way I feel about orange men.” As the chorus of boos grew louder, he is said to have responded, “Listen, it’s about the kids. … I apologize for bringing politics to an event. This is America— it still is. So I apologize to your white privilege.” Despite such stale comedy, Lopez has managed to star in various television projects almost without pause for 15 years.

Hollywood’s culture of left-wing propaganda and broad exclusion of conservatives have persisted for decades, but cracks in Lalaland’s edifice have decayed into full collapse. Still reeling from the worst summer box office in over a decade, Hollywood’s once most powerful producer Harvey Weinstein has been accused of rape and harassment by dozens of women. Woody Allen, who married his sort-of step-daughter, worries Weinstein’s downfall may “lead to a witch hunt atmosphere” in which Tinseltown’s long-reputed culture of sexual misconduct will claim many more powerful scalps that could collapse the entire entertainment establishment.

It’s a good time to be a conservative in the culture. An insurgent conservative counter-culture amplified by the David vs. Goliath presidential victory of Donald Trump stands poised to topple the dessicated remains of Hollywood. Every late night talk show host on television leans left, yet Conan, Colbert, Corden, Kimmel, Noah, Oliver, Wilmore, Fallon, Maher, and Meyers combined boast precious few more views than Jay Leno used to garner by himself. Meanwhile, conservative comedian Steven Crowder’s original, daring program has earned him over 225 million pairs of eyeballs on YouTube alone, all without a single leftist television executive’s approval.

My colleague Andrew Klavan may be the prophet of the new conservative culture ascendance. His 2014 pamphlet, The Crisis in the Arts: Why the Left Owns the Culture and How Conservative Can Begin to Take It Back, offered “a battle plan for fighting the culture war by a leading conservative who has been behind enemy lines with several New York Times best sellers and who refuses to cede our cultural heritage to people hostile to America.” After decades of struggle, conservatives are beginning to win that war. Hollywood won’t play nice with right-wingers. So what? Now conservatives can produce our own art, which coincidentally Klavan and I are doing right now in our new narrative podcast Another Kingdom.

For years, left-wing gatekeepers successfully barred the Right from every major cultural institution in the country, from entertainment in Hollywood to news and publishing in New York. Now those walls are tumbling down, and conservatives ought to keep up the pressure and support the alternative platforms that host art and culture produced by conservatives. It’s our best chance in decades to turn the crisis in the arts to a victory.
