Key House Dem Dodges On Supporting Pelosi For Leader

Rep. Tony Cárdenas (D-Calif.) on Wednesday dodged a question regarding his support for House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

Cárdenas was asked during an interview on CNN about a meeting he attended earlier this year that reportedly involved a discussion on whether Pelosi should be replaced. He was pressed on whether he feels that is necessary.

“I think that those meetings are necessary. We’re a body of members elected by the public,” he said.

“And the bottom line is this: The question that I have to my colleagues, are we putting our best foot forward? What do we need to do?”

Cárdenas said Democrats need to do a better job of communicating their message to the public.

“Does that mean with, or without Nancy Pelosi as Democratic leader?” CNN anchor John Berman asked.

“No one person is more important than this country,”Cárdenas replied. “And the bottom line is this: We need to move forward with our best foot forward, with the best plan, with the best individuals and having the best, honest message.”

He was again asked whether he thinks that could be done with Pelosi.

“As far as I’m concerned, we have to look in the mirror and realize whether we can or can’t,” the congressman said. “And then move forward and make some tough decisions.”

Pelosi’s leadership came under scrutiny earlier this year after a disappointing loss in a House special election in Georgia.

After that loss, questions resurfaced about whether Democrats can retake the House with Pelosi leading the charge.
