Rep. Luis Gutierrez To AG Sessions: Ask Trump To Resign, And I’ll Ask Hillary Clinton To Resign

(CNSNews.com) – In his opening statement at a House Judiciary oversight hearing on the Justice Department, Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) on Tuesday suggested a way to save the committee time addressing Democratic concerns that the Trump campaign colluded with Russia and GOP concerns about former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton: ask them both to resign.

“Before I begin, I think I have a solution that could allow the committee to move onto more important matters like gun control and immigration. Your side clearly wants an investigation of Hillary Clinton, and our side has been begging for months to hold hearings and start an investigation of the Trump administration and campaign’s improper ties to Mr. Putin and the Russian government,” he said.

“My solution would save the American taxpayers a lot of grief and a lot of money by eliminating the need for the investigation. I propose we simply go to the president and the former secretary of state and ask them both to resign,” Gutierrez said, without saying what Clinton would be resigning from.

“Then we can move on as a nation and from an election that never seems to end,” he said.

“Now I did Google organizations that Hillary Clinton leads, and it came out zero, so I’m not sure what you’re going to get her to resign from, because she doesn’t appear to be in charge of anything. Last time I checked, she got 3 million more votes than Donald Trump, but she lost the election. So I don’t know, why don’t we move on and really look at the nation,” Gutierrez said.

Then the congressman asked Sessions whether he thinks candidates should fulfill their campaign promises, to which Sessions answered, “People make a lot of promises, and you should try to honor your promise.”

Sessions added that he believes an attorney general “should enforce the law first and foremost.”

“I understand enforce the law,” Gutierrez said, “but he said you’re helping him on the Muslim ban, on immigration issue.”

“The president makes decisions, and if it’s lawful, we defend it,” Sessions replied.

Gutierrez reminded Sessions what Trump said during the second presidential debate that if he wins, he would instruct his attorney general to get a special prosecutor to look into Hillary Clinton’s “situation.” The congressman asked if Sessions would fulfill that campaign promise.

“We will comply with the law with regard to special prosecutor appointments,” Sessions said.

When pressed again, Sessions said, “I’ll fulfill my duty as attorney general.”

“So the brilliant campaign, remarkable campaign, big smile on your face. You love the campaign, but you’re not going to fulfill his campaign promises. I hope you don’t, so I’m kind of happy with your answer up to now,” Gutierrez said.
