Vast Majority of Americans Agree with Trump on Confederate Memorials

A new poll conducted in the aftermath of the chaos that rocked Charlottesville, Virginia over the weekend shows most Americans agree with President Trump’s stance on Confederate war memorials.

The NPR/PBS survey shows that a vast majority of Republicans and Independents believe statues honoring the Confederacy should “remain as a historical symbol.” According to the poll, 86% of Republicans support the monuments and 61% of Independents also believe the statues should remain.

Democrats remain fairly split, with 44% saying the memorials should “remain” and 47% arguing they should “be removed because they are offensive to some people.”

President Trump weighed-in on the ongoing controversy on social media Thursday, saying it’s ”Sad to see the history and culture of our great country being ripped apart with the removal of our beautiful statues and monuments.”

”You can’t change history, but you can learn from it. Robert E Lee, Stonewall Jackson – who’s next, Washington, Jefferson? So foolish!” he added.

The status of Confederate war memorials has gained national headlines in recent days, after white nationalist demonstrations in Virginia left one woman dead and dozens injured.

The rally was originally scheduled as a demonstration against the removal of a Confederate statue, and rapidly escalated as violence between protesters and counter-protesters spun out of control.
