This is bizarre and disturbing. There may be no better words for it. If a defendant’s lawyer sent in something like this, there would be consequences.
And it’s one thing for Senator Gillibrand, a failed presidential candidate, to pull a stunt like this, but it’s been signed by Senator Whitehouse, who apparently drafted it, Senator Hirono, Senator Blumenthal, and Senator Durbin.

“Brief” should be in quotation marks. In practice, this is a threatening letter warning the court not to rule against their political position or else.
