On Saturday, former-Vice President Joe Biden spoke at a gubernatorial event for Ralph Northam, Virginia’s current lieutenant governor. During his speech, Biden criticized the notion of repealing or replacing portions of the Affordable Care Act (ACA):
Think of the peace of mind that this has brought to millions of people about to be ripped away.
Did the people of Arizona have peace of mind when their health insurance premiums spiked by an average of 116% in 2017?
The Associated Press notes that although “75 percent of the people enrolled in plans this year get subsidies to help pay their premiums, and those subsidies will go up along with premiums … the other 25 percent – those who make too much to qualify for subsidies because they earn more than 400 percent of the federal poverty level – are on the hook for the entire amount.”
The subsidies come from the government through tax dollars, which means in the long run, we’re still “on the hook” for the cash.
Do the people living in areas where there is only one ACA marketplace insurance provider have peace of mind?
Politifact reports:
In 32 percent of counties, individuals looking to buy health insurance through the Affordable Care Act online marketplace have just one choice for their insurance provider, according to an analysis by the nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation, last updated in November 2016. … That’s a significant change from 2016, when just 7 percent of counties — and one state, Wyoming — were limited to one insurance provider on the online exchanges.
Joe Biden’s remark is a perfect encapsulation of progressive thinking. “Peace of mind” trumps concrete and effective results. “Peace of mind” for the right constituents trumps the damages inflicted upon everyone else.
In the end, progressives count on illusory and ambiguous “peace of mind” because it wins the votes of those who don’t take the time to study policy proposals.
