A narco-terrorist and high-ranking leader in the Cartel Del Noreste (CDN) faction of Los Zetas was shot in a series of shootouts with state police in the border of city of Nuevo Laredo.
The drug lord and his close associates were nearly captured on New Year’s Eve. This incident led to subsequent shootouts the following day as cartel assailants targeted officers.
Mexico’s recently created National Guard stayed on the sidelines during these attacks.
The New Year’s Day shootouts had several injuries and casualties. Additionally, one innocent bystander was shot near a hospital. As a response to the ongoing violence, the Webb County Sheriff in Texas issued an alert advising residents to not go into Mexico. Similarly, the U.S. Consulate in Nuevo Laredo asked American citizens to take the violence in account when traveling.
