CNN host Alisyn Camerota ripped President Donald Trump’s response to a question about gun control measures Tuesday, calling it “absurd” and a recycling of “the tired NRA talking point” on good guys with guns stopping bad guys with guns.
Trump dismissed an NBC reporter’s question in South Korea over whether he would support “extreme vetting” for people seeking to purchase guns, mirroring a phrase he uses for immigrants trying to enter the United States.
“If you did what you’re suggesting there would have been no difference three days ago, and you might not have had that very brave person who happened to have a gun in his truck and shoot him, and hit him and neutralize him,” Trump said.
Camerota, a former Fox News host, blasted the comment on “New Day.”
“This is just so absurd,” Camerota said. “The president is sticking to the tired NRA talking point of ‘the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.’ That is not true in other countries. Other countries are able to stop bad guys from getting guns.”
Camerota recounted the Texas shooter’s history of domestic abuse and how he was then able to purchase guns.
However, the Air Force announced on Monday it had failed to share records on the killer’s 2012 domestic-violence-related court martial with the FBI’s firearms background-check system, which then enabled him to pass background checks he would have otherwise failed.
CNN analyst David Gregory pointed that “existing measure” out, to which Camerota replied, “fair enough.”
