Staff for the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) forced a photographer to bury a photo he took of then-Senator Barack Obama with Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, a controversial black leader who has been identified as a black separatist.
Obama smiled with Farrakhan at a 2005 CBC meeting early in his Washington political career, three years before he ran for president.
The photographer, Askia Muhammad, who focused on covering Obama at that time, told North Star News Today that CBC staff tried to bury the photo to protect Obama’s political career.
North Star News Today reported:
“Muhammad had not even left the scene when he received a call and the photo was being summoned by a member of the Congressional Black Caucus. Muhammad ultimately surrendered the disk to Minister Farrakhan’s chief of staff. And it remained one of America’s best hidden secrets for the next 12 years…
“I gave the picture up at the time and basically swore secrecy,” Muhammad said in an exclusive interview with the Trice Edney News Wire this week. “But after the nomination was secured and all the way up until the inauguration; then for eight years after he was President, it was kept under cover.’”
It is unclear how much this photo would have hurt Obama in 2008 with his voter demographics, but considering the righteous outrage aimed at Obama’s pastor Rev. Jeremiah Wright, it is clear that the photo could have haunted the young politician.
Farrakhan, organizer of the Million Man March, has a relationship with Obama that has subsequently been publicized.
Obama has faced criticism for being sympathetic to Islam.
