In last week’s article, I noted that it wasn’t just about Randa Jarrar who had celebrated Barbara Bush’d death. Fresno State had a bigger problem with violently hateful faculty.
In the winter of last year, Lars Maischak had tweeted, “To save American democracy, Trump must hang. The sooner and the higher, the better. #TheResistance.”
The next day he inquired, “Has anyone started soliciting money and design drafts for a monument honoring the Trump assassin, yet?”
Toward the end of the week, he proposed the mass murder of Republicans, “Justice = The execution of two Republicans for each deported immigrant.”
Maischak was a history adjunct at Fresno State whose topics had included, “Marx and Hegel for Historians.”
Now Lars is back. And defending Jarrar.
Perhaps you heard that I made comments to friends on social media identifying President Trump as a fascist and predicted he would face execution if he continued to dismantle American democracy. I would love to have that debate with you, so you can tell me why you think I have it wrong, or why Jarrar was not justified in her assessment.
That wasn’t what Lars actually tweeted. Anyone tweeting, “Trump must hang. The sooner and the higher, the better,” is not looking for a debate about abstract issues.
Likewise, Jarrar cackling that Barbara Bush was a racist and that her entire family should die, was not the opening round to a debate.
Lars had previously apologized for his tweets, but the apology apparently wasn’t very sincere.
But the wish to deport, rape, kill, fire, arrest and drive out of town on a rail those whose opinions upset you is the clear marker of an authoritarian mind.
