House Dems Demand End to Tax Exempt Status for Freedom Center Over ISIS Attack

House Democrats continued their war on the First Amendment with a Ways and Means Committee hearing titled, “HOW THE TAX CODE SUBSIDIZES HATE.”

The goal was to call for stripping tax exempt status from organizations that had been deemed hate groups. Who had deemed as such? Who knows. The hearing materials don’t have a list of groups, but they appear to match groups listed by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

The SPLC, whose hate map had caused at least one terrorist attack on the Family Research Council, whose leadership was forced to resign in disgrace over allegations of racism and sexual harassment, would be the arbiter of deciding which non-profit groups deserve tax exempt status.

While no list is available, the House Ways and Means committee claimed that over 60 hate groups had tax exempt status. The Examiner’s Nihal Krishan has linked to the Chronicle of Philanthropy’s list of 55 groups which includes the Freedom Center. The three groups listed by the Committee on its Twitter feed all appear on the Chronicle’s list. As does the Freedom Center and Jihad Watch.
