Newsweek is warning white farmers in South Africa to surrender their land to “indigenous populations” or face a land confiscation similar to that of Zimbabwe’s land-grab in the early 2000’s.
According to the Newsweek piece, if white farmers plan to keep their land, they are “defending their privilege.”
“[A]ttempts to defend their privilege could well lead to the loss of everything they own—an important lesson from Zimbabwe in the early 2000s,” wrote Ben Cousins, Professor at the University of Western Cape.
In 2000, Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe redistributed 17.3 million acres of land from white farmers to black resident to “eliminate the traces of colonialism.” During the land grab, 4,500 farmers were forcibly removed from their land.
This radical move turned Zimbabwe’s agricultural industry upside down, and 15 years later, the country could no longer feed itself. Agricultural production drastically dropped, and contributed to Zimbabwe’s drastic hyperinflation.
But that does not seem to bother the social justice warriors at Newsweek, even knowing the disastrous results in Zimbabwe. They call this “progress.”
“Land reform is a key issue in South Africa, due to the long history of dispossession of indigenous populations by white settlers,” the piece said. “Progress has been painfully slow over the past 24 years, but the question of land is now suddenly at the top of the political agenda.”
Punishing white farmers for the “sins” of past generations, though they had nothing to do with colonialism in South Africa, is only one step further than America’s social justice left has gotten.
“[W]hite South Africans should be offering their energies (and for farmers, some of their land) to help find solutions,” said Cousins. “This will help secure their future in the country.”
According to Newsweek, the future of South Africa will not be secure in the event that white farmers do not turn over their land. This sounds like a recipe for civil war.
