We really need to get past all this tribalism and strongman politics by singing a few verses of, “Shoot the Boer”.
In an address Tuesday in honor of the late Nelson Mandela ahead of the 100th anniversary of his birth, Obama criticized populist movements toward authoritarianism around the world and ridiculed the “utter loss of shame among political leaders” who lie.
The politics of fear and resentment and retrenchment began to appear. And that kind of politics is now on the move. It’s on the move at a pace that would have seemed unimaginable just a few years ago,” he told the crowd of around 15,000 people in Johannesburg. “I am not being alarmist, I’m simply stating the facts. Look around — strongman politics are ascendant, suddenly, whereby elections and some pretense of democracy are maintained, the form of it, where those in powers seek to undermine every institution or norm that gives democracy meaning.”
“Should we understand the last 25 years of global integration is nothing more than a detour from the previous inevitable cycle of history,” he continued, “where might makes right and politics is a hostile competition between tribes and races and religions? And nations compete in a zero sum game constantly teetering on the edge of conflict until full-blown war breaks out? Is that what we think?”
Below that is a picture of Obama with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. Perhaps Obama can have a chat with him about this.
“The expropriation of land without compensation is envisaged as one of the measures that we will use to accelerate redistribution of land to black South Africans.”
Cyril Ramaphosa is the latest ANC strongman replacing Jacob Zuma who had been accused of corruption and rape. The ANC is closely partnered with South Africa’s Communist party.
Obama is delivering a condescending lecture about strongman politics at a day commemorating a Communist terrorist at the invitation of a government allied with the Communists.
