A photo of U.S. Army infantry officer and West Point graduate Spenser Rapone was making its rounds online in late September due to the fact that – while in his uniform – Rapone had the words “Communism will win” scrawled inside of his cap.
In the wake of the recent NFL protests, a West Point graduate and infantry officer tweeted out the following image with the caption: “#VeteransForKaepernick” – a disgusting display from an officer.
The former Democrat lawmaker who nominated Communist Spenser Rapone to West Point strongly disavowed his tweets calling for political violence and claiming ‘Communism will win’.
The former Dem Rep. for Pennsylvania, Jason Altmire called Rapone’s tweets shocking, disappointing and abhorrent.
West Point released a statement via the official West Point website addressing the controversy surrounding Spenser Rapone’s ‘Communism will win’ social media posts.
RESPONSE TO SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS BY USMA GRADUATE — September 26, 2017
The U.S. Military Academy strives to develop leaders who internalize the academy’s motto of
Duty, Honor, Country, and who live the Army values. Second Lieutenant Rapone’s actions in no
way reflect the values of the U.S. Military Academy or the U.S. Army.
As figures of public trust, members of the military must exhibit exemplary conduct, and are
prohibited from engaging in certain expressions of political speech in uniform. Second
Lieutenant Rapone’s chain of command is aware of his actions and is looking into the matter.
The academy is prepared to assist the officer’s chain of command as required.
Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) asked the Army to remove Spenser Rapone in a letter sent to acting Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy on Tuesday. Rubio said Rapone’s pro-Communism postings on social media indicate he had plans to “infiltrate and sabotage the military.”
“While I strongly believe academic institutions must respect the exchange of ideas and allow students to voice their opinions, members of the military who harbor anti-American views and express their desire to harm our country and its leaders are unfit to serve and defend our nation — and certainly should not enjoy the privilege of attending or graduating from an institution such as West Point, a taxpayer-funded military academy.”
Rubio also called for the military to pursue disciplinary options as the Washington Examiner reported:
In addition to requesting the Army nullify Rapone’s commission, Rubio asked the military to pursue disciplinary options under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, and for West Point to look into revoking his degree. Rubio also said Rapone should have to pay back his tuition to the U.S. Military Academy.
“This is clearly not just a matter of law but also of common sense, and I can only assume Rapone’s unchecked behavior is an extreme embarrassment for the United States Army and the United States Military Academy,” he wrote.
