Ryan: FBI Finally Agrees To Provide Dossier-Related Documents Congress Has Been Asking For

(CNSNews.com) – The FBI has informed House Republicans that it intends to comply with a subpoena issued in August for documents related to the Trump dossier.

“We’ve been asking for documents from the FBI for months,” House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) told a news conference on Thursday.

“And so…the FBI got in touch with us yesterday afternoon, and they have informed us that they will comply with our document requests and that they will provide the documents Congress has been asking for by next week, and we expect the FBI to honor that commitment.”

The Washington Examiner reported in early September that the House Intelligence Committee, in August, had subpoenaed the FBI and the Justice Department “for documents relating to the dossier, the FBI’s relationship with dossier author Christopher Steele, and the bureau’s possible role in supporting what began as an opposition research project against candidate Donald Trump in the final months of last year’s presidential campaign.”

Neither the FBI nor the Justice Department turned over the documents by the September 1 deadline, which was then moved to September 14. Nothing happened by then, either.

The Examiner reported that House Republicans issued two more subpoenas for FBI Director Christopher Wray and Attorney General Jeff Sessions so they would be forced to explain why the documents request was not being honored.

The FBI reportedly said that turning over the dossier-related documents might interfere with the FBI’s ongoing Trump-Russia investigation.

“The point of these (Russia) investigations is to find the truth, and to make sure things — if laws were violated or mistakes were made, they’re not made again, and transparency is what gets you that,” Ryan said on Thursday.

He noted that it is Congress’s job to conduct “full and thorough oversight over the executive branch,” and he called it “so frustrating” to learn aspects of the investigation through the media.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) told Fox News that he wants to find out if the FBI used the opposition-research dossier compiled by a former British spy — and paid for by the Clinton campaign and the DNC — as the basis for surveillance of U.S. citizens.

“Did the FBI use this dossier to get any warrants? Did they use it to open up a counter-intelligence investigation, and if they did, if they’re using unverified information to open up inquiries into American citizens, I think we have a big problem,” Nunes told Fox News’s Tucker Carlson Wednesday night.
