Senior Nebraska Senator Jim Inhofe is writing a bill to end the federal government’s catch-and-release program at the U.S.-Mexico border once and for all.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order banning Catch-and-Release at the U.S.-Mexico border, but a so-called bed shortage is resulting in the continuation of the harmful Catch and Release policies.
A court ruling setting a 21-day limit on housing some detainees has complicated Trump’s plan. Thousands of illegal border-crossers are still being caught and released.
Enter Senator Jim Inhofe, who is trying to write a new law that would obviously overrule any court judgments. The bill would require illegal border-crossers to immediately be sent back to Mexico.
Inhofe’s bill is still in the writing stage but is expected within the next two weeks, and it will surely capture the national attention.
This bill will set a firm benchmark for Republican lawmakers on border security. If any Republicans try to block the bill or vote no on it, they will have to justify that decision to their constituents and voters.
