The Myth of Stopping Migration by Fixing Other Countries

Experts have entered the immigration debate with proposals to reduce global migration with foreign aid. Fix the countries the migrants are coming from and they won’t be as eager to come.

The problem with that proposal is that those countries aren’t going to be fixed with billions in foreign aid. It’s not clear that anything is likely to fix Mexico or El Salvador, to list two common examples. Let alone Iraq and Somalia.

And even if some of these places were stabilized, the majority of migrants are economic migrants. They’re spending a sizable amount of money to get access to the economic and social welfare resources of Europe and the United States.

Nothing we do is going to put the average migrant country economically on par with the United States. The idea that this is any kind of solution is just more sucker bait.
