Trump: I’m Heading To Washington This Morning, Work To Do On Trade And Military

President Donald Trump tweeted Monday that he was returning to Washington, D.C., saying there was much work to do and he would be focusing on trade and the military.

Trump, who was scheduled to remain at his golf club in Bedminster, N.J., for another week on a working vacation, also reiterated his support for Sen. Luther Strange (R., Ala.) in his Senate race and declared he would be changing bad trade deals made by “obstructionist Democrats.”

Trump is reportedly expected Monday to direct U.S. trade representative Robert Lighthizer to look into Chinese trade practices and intellectual property violations. A Chinese state newspaper said Monday that such a trade probe could “poison” relations between the two countries.

The trade investigation comes as the president has been asking China to do more regarding North Korea’s rogue nuclear program; North Korea relies heavily on China as by far its top trading partner.

Trump returns to Washington on the heels of a tumultuous weekend stemming from violence in Charlottesville, Virginia. A demonstration of white supremacists led to clashes with counter-protesters, and one man was arrested for ramming his car into a crowd of counter-protesters, killing one.

Trump took criticism from both sides of the aisle for condemning violence “on many sides” and not specifically calling out neo-Nazis and white supremacists in his remarks.
