Reports have emerged that Attorney General Jeff Sessions will leave the White House along with his deputy, Rod Rosentein, if President Trump fires the latter.
“Sessions made his position known in a phone call to White House counsel Donald McGahn last weekend, as Trump’s fury at Rosenstein peaked after the deputy attorney general approved the FBI’s raid April 9 on the president’s personal attorney Michael Cohen,” says a report by the Washington Post.
Rosenstein is overseeing Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation over alleged “Russian collusion” by the Trump campaign during the 2016 election cycle. Trump has questioned the never-ending investigation several times in the face of a complete lack of evidence of wrongdoing. Mueller’s probe is far afield from where it began, and led to indictments of Gen. Michael Flynn and Paul Manafort, associates of Trump, on charges unrelated to collusion.
“In the phone call with McGahn, Sessions wanted details of a meeting Trump and Rosenstein held at the White House on April 12, according to a person with knowledge of the call,” the report continues.
According to the report, Sessions did not make his statement as a threat to the White House, but rather in manner that conveyed the “untenable position” that would result if Rosenstein is axed.

It appeared that Trump would fire Sessions last summer over Sessions’ apparent inaction in getting to the bottom of the criminality of established players in Washington. Numerous establishment Republican lawmakers and groups fought the President, and Sessions kept his job.
Sessions’ tenure as Attorney General has been at best unremarkable, and at worst a disaster. His two major policy initiatives, advocating stricter criminalization of marijuana and expanding civil asset forfeiture programs, have perturbed libertarian-leaning Trump supporters, and are largely a waste of political capital.
Many have speculated that Trump is keeping Sessions around for reasons unknown but calculated, and that Sessions has a master plan and is working behind the scenes to realize that plan. Still others have looked at past Republican administration failures, and see more of the same from Sessions.
