GOP’s Wide-Range Immigration Proposal

May 18, 2017

The Chicago Tribune looks deeper into the bill that is being proposed by GOP lawmakers. Though there are no plans to build a wall along any borders, the bill does include punishments for sanctuary cities, prison sentences for immigrants who illegally reenter the U.S., reimbursement for states that must call in their National Guard. This bill would be a great step for President Trump to meet the promises he made during his campaign last year but the bill still has issues. The issue with the bill is that it does not include the long-promised border wall, penalties against companies that hire illegal immigrants, and other verification systems that were expected to be part of Trump’s immigration plan.

As always, this bill is not being accepted by the democrats. They are not willing to pass the bill or compromise unless there is a plan for the 11 million undocumented immigrants to gain legal residency. The push back the Trump has gotten over sanctuary cities and immigration is even a greater call for this bill and more. The 11 million undocumented immigrants and more than 100 sanctuary cities will only increase without have punishments in place and allowing for the federal government to step in.
