John Stossel On ReasonTV: California Should Be Allowed To Secede

In a new video from ReasonTV, John Stossel argues that places like California and Catalonia (in Spain) should be allowed to secede from their parent governments if they want to.

Michael Strong, the co-founder of Startup Cities Institute, tells Stossel in the video: “…we need lots of experiments. It’s funny, in the world of science, we believe in freedom to experiment. Now, we need to go to the world of government, and believe in freedom to experiment.”

The California Freedom Coalition is currently gathering signatures for a 2018 ballot measure that would allow the state to begin the process of detaching itself from the United States. The document describing the initiative reads in part:

Repeals provision in California Constitution stating California is an inseparable part of the United States. Directs [the] Governor, in consultation with those members of Congress who represent California, to negotiate continually greater autonomy from federal government, up to and including agreement establishing California as a fully independent country, provided voters agree to revise the California Constitution.

Proponents of the initiative need 585,407 signatures by January 22, 2018 for it to appear on the November 2018 ballot.

What do you think? Should California be allowed to carry out their grand experiment?
