The National Football League is now the only major sports organization in the country to publicly oppose the GOP’s proposed tax legislation, saying the new bill cuts the NFL’s tax-free bonds utilized to build new stadiums around the country.
A spokesman for the embattled league weighed-in this week on the Republican effort to modernize the nation’s aging and overly-complicated tax system, arguing the giant construction projects help create thousands of jobs.
“You can look around the country and see the economic development that’s generated from some of these stadiums,” Joe Lockhart, a former Clinton aide and current NFL spokesperson told a conference call, reports Reuters.
The comments will further alienate furious fans who have abandoned the league in droves after football players disrespected the US flag while “taking a knee” during the national anthem.
President Trump kicked off a national firestorm earlier this year after he unloaded on the “disgraceful” athletes, urging Americans across the country to boycott the NFL until officials and team owners demand their players remain standing during the “Star-Spangled Banner.’
