You can watch the whole speech unveiling the new National Security Strategy above. The bullet points are that it’s an America First strategy that looks at mutual cooperation rather than a free ride. It’s patriotic and realist. But I thought it was worth calling attention to a striking paragraph from the actual document.
For generations the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians has been understood as the prime irritant preventing peace and prosperity in the region . Today, the threats from jihadist terrorist organizations and the threat from Iran are creating the realization that Israel is not the cause of the region’s problems. States have increasingly found common interests with Israel in confronting common threats.
This topples a pillar of the foreign policy establishment. It takes out the terror denial myth that blames Israel for everything. And it lays the blame at the feet of Islamic violence and terror.
It’s striking because it conflicts with the message of some of the top foreign policy figures still standing in the administration. But it’s also a clear dose of reality.
“Jihad” appears 27 times in the NSS document. And quite accurately.
jihadist terrorists such as ISIS and al-Qa’ida continue to spread a barbaric ideology that calls for the violent destruction of governments and innocents they consider to be apostates. these jihadist terrorists attempt to force those under their influence to submit to Sharia law.
A security strategy that not only mentions Jihad, but emphasizes that the goal is the imposition of Sharia law.
America, alongside our allies and partners, is fighting a long war against these fanatics who advance a totalitarian vision for a global Islamist caliphate that justifies murder and slavery, promotes repression, and seeks to undermine the American way of life.
There is a bit of a CVE relic here.
This includes combating the evil ideology of jihadists by exposing its falsehoods, promoting counter-narratives, and amplifying credible voices.
The document uses Islamist frequently and always with a negative connotation. It’s linked to ‘supremacism’ and ‘violence’. This is a radical departure from the Obama era where the Muslim Brotherhood was coddled and political Islam was treated as the solution, Sharia was sacred and Israel was always the problem. Never Jihad.
