Allegations against Kevin Spacey … There have been consistent rumors about big-name Hollywood leading men who have sexually assaulted young male actors. Last night it was reported by BuzzFeed that Anthony Rapp accused Spacey of sexual contact when Rapp was 14. Spacey chose his apology as the time to come out of the closet. Spacey said, “I choose now to live as a gay man.” He also blamed alcohol for the encounter, as well as saying he did not remember it.
Media run cover for Spacey … The media focused on Spacey’s admission of homosexuality instead of the accusation. Mediaite has a rundown of media outlets that focused on Spacey’s vow to “live as a gay man,” instead of focusing on the accusation.
Double standard … The focus on Spacey’s sexual orientation is reminiscent of a social media post last week by Ellen, in which she was photographed ogling singer Katy Perry’s breasts. Ellen accompanied the tweeted photo with “Happy Birthday, @KatyPerry! It’s time to bring out the big balloons!” The media was mostly silent, but some people found the image to be hypocritical.
