Is Anti-American Sentiment The Biggest Threat To The Nation?

A Jamaican-born professor of philosophy has had enough of hearing invectives spewed against America, especially in the classroom.

Prompted to challenge the derision of the American Dream and the depiction of America as a white supremacist nation, Dr. Jason D. Hill of DePaul University wrote an open letter to journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates. Coates’s 2015 book, titled “Between the World and Me,” is often required reading to depict the black American experience to students.

Hill calls such required reading “child abuse” or “child neglect.”

Hill is disturbed by the growing anti-American orthodoxy that he hears on American campuses, and believes Americans need to be fortified with a rational pride that recognizes what is great about America. For this reason, he has written a new book, a “love letter” to his adopted country, America, titled “We Have Overcome: An Immigrant’s Letter to the American People.”

In this exclusive video interview for The Daily Caller New Foundation, Hill teases out what makes America unique and exceptional. He believes that if more Americans realized the nation’s greatness, the country would be inoculated against future external threats he feels are building, be they from sharia law, Russia, a nuclear Iran or North Korea.

He cites the fact that America is not a tribal nation, but is welcoming to all. The aspirational nature of the nation, where anyone can start afresh if they have grit, tenacity, resilience and will reject an entitlement attitude, excites him. The fact that the U.S. was founded on moral principles and that the country is always working to solve real problems that crop up also make him proud. But it is the American people, fundamentally cheerful, optimistic, compassionate, and generous, who make this country such a beautiful place to Hill.

White liberals incur his wrath, and his eloquent rejection of being a victim confounds them.

“If my emancipation as a black person rests in my hands and I will not allow you to expropriate my creative agency on behalf of my life, and if the purpose and meaning of your existence relies on emancipating me from my suffering and my victimization, then I’ve basically eradicated your purpose and your meaning from your life,” Hill said, adding that liberals depend on blacks continuing to suffer.

Hill also discussed who he sees in the “alt-left,” including Sen. Bernie Sanders, Cornell West, Black Lives Matter, Coates and others. This radicalism is taking ascendancy among the professoriate in the classrooms, he said, and any position that does not align with theirs constitutes hate speech.

Growing anti-Americanism is the biggest domestic threat to the nation, according to Hill. It is infecting American youth at a stunning speed. He fears from his experience that young people are excessively sentimentality to non-American interests. He believes there are too many Americans who would rather root for the America’s adversaries if ever a choice had to be made.
