Jerry Jones Scoffs at Implied Threat to Steal His Franchise Over Opposition to Protests

The National Football League put on a great dog and pony show for the Veterans Day weekend games to show just how patriotic that it is despite siding with those who have decided that disrespecting the national anthem over some perceived racial slight is acceptable.

Veterans groups were working on boycotts, but the league rolled out the red, white and blue bunting, piled on the platitudes and did its best to convince a dwindling fan base that none of what they had witnessed ever happened.

Who are you going to believe, Roger Goodell’s formidable public relations machine or your own lying eyes?

There were NFLPA ads featuring the most divisive of the Kaepernick cultists paying lip service to vets and the Fox NFL crew set up their set at the Naval Air Station in Norfolk, Virginia.

But it was all hogwash because behind the scenes, Goodell’s allies were fending off efforts by owner Jerry Jones to put off the extension of the commish’s contract over obscene demands as well as the damage to the product that has occurred on his watch – mostly through his handling of the kneelers.

A story was floated that a number of owners and the league were examining the use of an obscure portion of the league’s bylaws to punish the patriotic Jones by stripping him of the Dallas Cowboys after Jones suggested that suing the owners and the league was a possibility.

How very American.

Jones, however, isn’t taking it and has scoffed at the implied threat as well as leaks of stories that he has been warned over his opposition to Goodell’s by the compensation committee.

Via CBS Sports “Jerry Jones says he has received no notice from owners, calls ousting ‘ridiculous’”:

Jerry Jones has refuted the New York Times report that he has been issued a cease-and-desist warning from the six NFL owners on the compensation committee in response to Jones reportedly threatening to sue the league and the owners on the committee.

The range of punishments, according to the Times, includes fines, docking draft picks and even suspending Jones, who has owned the Cowboys since 1989.

“Roger [Goodell] has almost 18 months left [on his contract],” Jones explained. “We’ve got all the time in the world to evaluate what we’re doing, and all the time in the world to extend him. We just need to slow this train down and discuss the issues at hand in the NFL.”

Meanwhile, Falcons owner Arthur Blank, the compensation committee’s chairman, doesn’t appear to be taking Jones’ advice. Blank issued this statement on Monday:

“The committee is continuing its work towards finalizing a contract extension with the commissioner,” he said. “The negotiations are progressing and we will keep ownership apprised of the negotiations as they move forward. We do not intend to publicly comment on our discussions.”

AND

The Times report meshes with what CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reported on Sunday: Some owners are starting to turn on Jones because, according to sources, “his attacks on commissioner Roger Goodell are being seen by his peers as a direct reaction to his anger of Ezekiel Elliott’s six-game suspension and are diminishing his respect and influence among other owners.”

In addition to the cease-and-desist warning, some owners are reportedly discussing a nuclear option — the long-shot possibility of making Jones forfeit his ownership in the Cowboys.

Jones addressed that too.

“I’ve had not one inkling of communication with the league office or any owner that would suggest something that laughable and ridiculous,” he said.

That Goodell’s contract extension wouldn’t be questioned shows a deeper problem with the owners, some who have gone SJW native because if an ESPN story is true, the same man who is wrecking the league is making exorbitant demands:

The committee will address Goodell’s salary and compensation package. The last written counterproposal from Goodell, which was around the first of August, was seeking about $49.5 million per year, as well as the lifetime use of a private jet and lifetime health insurance for his family, according to a source familiar with the negotiations.

Joe Lockhart, the executive vice president of communications, denied that Goodell had submitted such a written counterproposal. He also said there have been several meetings or conference calls among the compensation committee before Monday’s scheduled meeting.

The source who originally provided the information on Goodell’s “only written counterproposal” of $50 million with the perks is standing firm on the matter. The source only clarified that Goodell’s monetary proposal was for $49.5 million.

Hard to see how Jones has a problem with this? Granted that he is unhappy at the bully Goodell’s inconsistency in player disciplinary issues, especially since the six-game suspension of star running back Ezekiel Elliott takes the Cowboys down several pegs from Super Bowl contenders to also-rans.

You have to wonder at this point whether Goodell is punishing Jones for his stance on the ingrate players on the sidelines. Say what you will about the egomaniacal Jones but he understands the long-term damage to the brand that is being done by the protests even if his fellow owners don’t.

Jones has now called Goodell’s bluff.
